Soho

Soho Soho is the area South of Houston Street, extending to Canal Street, between Broadway and Sixth Avenue.

Soho has become one of the most desirable residential communities in the city because of its interesting architecture, spacious loft apartments, excellent restaurants, and art galleries. Soho's distinct cast-iron architecture sprouted from the factory boom of the 19th century.

Twentieth Century artists and sculptors snatched up these abandoned spaces for their extraordinary natural light, high ceilings, and lofty interiors. As the area became more popular, trendy, and gentrified, artists moved out and art dealers moved in. Soho is now known for its chic clothing stores, sophisticated restaurants and boutiques, and cutting-edge galleries.

A visitor to Soho can freely tour the many prestigious galleries located on West Broadway and Greene Street. Four-Twenty West Broadway houses several galleries, including that of Leo Castelli, who brought artists such as Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, and Roy Lichtenstein to worldwide attention.

The Guggenheim Museum Soho, on Broadway, showcases established contemporary artists. The New Museum of Contemporary Art features such events as living paintings where the artists are part of the art--and The Alternative Museum entertains its art lovers with jazz and contemporary classical concerts, poetry readings, and dance recitals.

The Film Forum and The Angelica Theater, both on West Houston Street, are two of the city's most popular havens for lovers of art, revival, and independent cinema
